Hungarian police admits making a mistake during fatal domestic violence case
Budapest police have launched an internal investigation after admitting failures in the case of M, a Japanese woman who was murdered on January 29. Authorities acknowledged that her reports of threats from her ex-husband were dismissed, leading to disciplinary proceedings against five officers, 444 reports.
The police announced measures to improve the handling of domestic violence cases, including reopening previously rejected cases nationwide and increasing training for officers. The victim, who had repeatedly sought help, was initially believed to have died in an accident, but an autopsy revealed signs of assault. Her ex-husband has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The case has sparked protests in Budapest.
Hungary to send military aid to Lebanon instead of Ukraine
Hungary will provide €991,500 to support the Lebanese army through the European Peace Facility instead of sending weapons to Ukraine, Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said. Szijjártó emphasized Hungary’s commitment to stability in the Middle East, Hungarian state news agency, MTI reports.
Hungary has sent substantial aid over the past seven years to support Lebanon’s Christian communities, and currently, Hungarian soldiers serve in peacekeeping operations there. Szijjártó welcomed Lebanon’s recent election of a Christian president and called for maintaining the Israel-Hamas ceasefire to ensure regional stability and "prevent new migration waves". He also urged Syrian refugees in Lebanon to "return home".
AfD leader speaks gender policy at joint press conference with Orban
"AfD is not a party whose leader is welcomed by prime ministers, but it is time to change that", Orbán said at a joint press conference with Alice Weidel, co-chair of the German far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Orbán has deliberately avoided formal contact with the AfD in recent years because he did not want it to affect intergovernmental relations. However, with Donald Trump's second term and Elon Musk's endorsement, Orbán said he wanted to break down the walls against the German far-right and called Weidel the person of the future. "AfD's agenda would benefit Hungary, from migration to energy policy," Orbán said during the press conference.
Reuters asked Weidel what she thought of the government's gender and family policy. She rejected the far-right label at length, saying that the German public media is "extremely biased against them and supports the ruling parties".
Weidel, who lives with a woman and has adopted children, considers herself a "liberal" and said that for her, the family is where the children are. She said she does not want drag queens in schools, saying there is "no need to confuse children about gender issues". She does not support gender and woke ideology, and added that: "Everyone should be living freely according to their own needs and the state should not interfere in the private affairs of families".
